“When you two save the city, maybe everyone will see, reptiles ain't that different.”
Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are on the case again, unfortunately, after an undercover mission results in major damage, they aren’t supposed to be. Snakes have not been part of the animal-friendly city of Zootopia for eons; however, when Nick and Judy discover evidence of a snake in a catering service van, it sends them on an unauthorized goose chase around the city, in which they will uncover secrets that were buried away and never meant to be seen.
Themes:
Differences, animals, the big city, biases, the police force, standing up for the truth, following leads, smuggling, saving the world, seriousness, proving oneself, partners, reputation, teamwork, the weather wall, cover-ups, reptiles, being a hero, changing the world, friendship, murder, racism, family, and fowl play (see what I did there?)
Language:
Dang - 1 Sucks - 1 Religious Exclamations - 3
Insults such as dumb bunny and butt head. One character says, “What the pork?”
Stuff to be aware of:
Scary - You won’t find anything scarier in this movie than in the first one.
Sexual - Nick wears a shirt that says, “foxy dad” on it.
There is a scene in which a male sheep is getting sheared, and the barber is cutting his wool in a way that makes him appear to have six-pack abs. An accident occurs in which the male sheep gets sheared in a way that makes him look like he has large breasts, like a female. He mentions that he loves it, and another sheep yells, “I’ll have what he is having!”
An elderly rabbit says, “I pray every day that you’ll come home and make babies.” One character, when discussing a snake, says “Him or her, with reptiles you never know.”
There is a humorous scene where a ram (male) ends up in a wedding veil and holding flowers. He then falls on a bed in front of a male fox. The fox makes a face that seems like he thinks the situation is funny.
Some characters wear bikinis, and there are shirtless dancing tigers, like the first movie. Judy and Nick talk about how it is their anniversary as partners. One scene takes place in a honeymoon suite.
One character uses the words three-some and four-some, but not in a sexual way.
Violence/Gore - There are a few fight scenes, but nothing graphic. A character trips over a lizard’s tale and it comes off. Worms and flies are eaten by several reptiles.
One character digs his claws into another character’s hand and leaves red slashes. A few characters get injected with snake venom.
Other - There is a bar scene where animals are drinking, but it is never said what they are drinking. A bunch of “illegal substances” falls out of a trailer. The blocks read, “catnip.” Piña koalas are mentioned.
Overall:
Seeing It With Your Family
For the most part, there isn’t anything in this one that wasn’t in the first one, EXCEPT I felt there were a few more sexual jokes in this one. I feel like most of them involve males dressing up or looking like females (as I mentioned above). There is a beaver character that appears in much of the movie, and until a character mentioned she was a “she,” I wasn’t sure what sex the character was.
What I Thought
My oldest daughter said this one was better than the first movie. I would say this is a worthy sequel. The animation continues to be gorgeous, the pacing of the story is good, and Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman have some good chemistry. Where the first movie dealt with stereotypes and proved to us that a rabbit and a fox could be partners, this one kind of continues that thought, with can they function together long term, or was this a one-and-done success. Overall, this all works well.
I have no complaints about the big picture. It’s a fun movie, that is, or at least it’s almost as good as the first. There are things I could complain about, but it really is a solid Disney movie, and they gave me all the puns I could ever ask for. Also, I love Ke Huy Quan (Data from Goonies) and Patrick Warburton (Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove).
Is there an after-credits scene you may wonder….
Yes, there is. It could be setting up a third movie, or it will just leave you with questions.
