The Most Boring Book Ever

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Page Count: 48

Award-winning writer Brandon Sanderson (the Mistborn Series) and author and artist Kaz Kibuishi (The Amulet Series) team up for a book about all the boring things we have to do in life, such as sitting in chairs and doing homework. However, with each boring sentence comes a colorful background that will fill your senses with excitement-fueled scenes of dragons, flying machines, and pirates.

Reading Audience:

Amazon suggests 4 - 8 years old, but seven and eight-year-olds might get a bit bored with the lack of a real story.

Stuff to be aware of:

Not much, there is some action scenes with sky pirates fighting and dragons breathing fire, but it is all very tame and kid-oriented.

Overall:

For younger readers who love an adventure-filled picture book, this one will be right up their alley. It’s the kind of book that practically invites you to make up your own stories as you flip through the pages. I’ve always loved the Amulet series, and Kibuishi brings that same beautifully detailed, imaginative illustration style here.

Sanderson has long been a favorite author in my wife’s family. I haven’t yet read his Mistborn series, but I’ve heard nothing but great things. Pairing his creativity with Kibuishi’s artwork feels like a winning combination—and it certainly delivers at least one or two memorable reading experiences.

There isn’t a traditional, overarching storyline here. Instead, readers are invited to use their imagination to create their own narratives from the vivid images provided. That approach reinforces the book’s central idea: even the most ordinary, mundane tasks can become exciting when imagination takes over. It’s a wonderful lesson for kids.

The artwork is stunning, the message is strong, and it’s an enjoyable read. It may not be the kind of book your kids pull off the shelf again and again due to the lack of a continuous story, but it’s definitely one worth experiencing.
