Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.”

“As you wish.”

Based on the beloved book by the same name, written by William Goldman, Wesley, a farm boy, must hunt down his long-lost love and rescue her. Little does he know his love’s kidnapping is at the center of a plot to start a war between two kingdoms.

Themes:

Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles, stories, adventure, war, the Pit of Despair, the Fire Swamp. weddings, mostly dead vs. all dead, liars, noble causes, storming castles,

Language:You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Son of a B*tch - 1 Religious Exclamation - 1

Name-calling such as friendless, brainless, and buffoon.

Stuff to be aware of:

Alcohol - One character is called a drunk and told he couldn’t afford brandy. Two characters drink wine from goblets. One character is holding a bottle in a scene and is clearly drunk.

Scary - Early on in the movie, there are “shrieking eels.” These puppets may have scared many a small child in the 80s (like my sister-in-law), but they are pretty fake-looking. There are also giant rats, R.O.U.S. that could be scary to young viewers, but they look like people wearing old rugs and rat masks.

Sexual - One character talks about a woman’s breasts being perfect and how she shouldn’t damage them. A woman jumps on top of a man on a bed and kisses him. Nothing else happens.

Violence/Gore - There are multiple fight and fencing scenes, but nothing graphic. One character says, “You can die slowly, and be cut into a million pieces.”

A R.O.U.S. catches on fire and gets stabbed multiple times. After the fight, Wesley’s shoulder is bloody and looks painful.

There is a torture scene. A man is strapped to a table, and he has suction cups attached to his bare chest. He squirms in pain as his life is sucked out of him. The machine is turned up and kills the man.

Inigo Montoya, in his final sword fight scene, gets stabbed multiple times. Blood can be seen on his clothes and body, and he slashes the man multiple times, causing him to bleed. One man dies in the battle, stabbed multiple times and bleeding.

Other - There is a Spanish character that is referred to multiple times as a “Spaniard.” Suicide is mentioned, and a character says that she will “kill herself.”

Overall:

Seeing It With Your Family “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

This one is mostly family-friendly, aside from the few things mentioned above.

What I Thought

Most people have formed opinions about this classic movie. I wanted to add it to my backlog for parents trying to remmeber what all is in it before watching it with their children.

I will say The Princess Bride is funny, campy, and very quotable; it is a classic. Everyone needs to see this movie at least once.
