Stuff to be aware of: (Be aware that some of this could be considered spoiler territory)

‍ ‍Alcohol and Drugs

  • Episode two:

    • A character says that Mr. Edwards makes whiskey, and he is seen having some tremors. This seems to be playing out like in the original show, but not a storyline from the books. He is briefly seen drinking a few sips from a flask and is confronted.

    • There is a brief story told about a drunk ship captain who wrecks his ship, and his crew drowns.

  • Episode three:

    • Tobacco is mentioned.

‍ ‍Scary

  • Episode one:

    • There is a scene where the family and their wagon almost get washed away by a river. It is very intense.

    • Wolves attempt to attack someone

  • Episode two:

    • There is a scene with some “something is kind of off with these people” characters. They are drinking and scare Laura and Mary.

‍ ‍Sexual - Ma and Pa kiss multiple times in each episode; you can feel their love.

‍ ‍Violence/Gore

  • Episode one:

    • The family dog jumps into the river and disappears.

    • A character hurts her foot. The wound is seen bleeding and looks bad.

    • Characters get guns pulled on them.

‍ ‍Other - A woman is wearing trousers, and she mentions that most people wouldn’t call her a “lady.”

  • Episode four:

    • A man’s clothes are folded up near a river, insinuating that he drowned himself. Suicide is never mentioned, and the man is not seen dead.

Overall:‍ ‍

Seeing It With Your Family

‍ ‍SO FAR, this show is as safe and family-friendly as the original. That doesn’t mean there aren’t intense scenes, a bit of blood, and deep themes that can be hard to think about.

Mr. Edwards alcoholism is done in a very family-oriented way. He is seen drinking from a flask in one scene. His alcoholism is seen in very subtle ways, like hand tremors. This could easily be used to discuss the hardships of alcoholism with your family.
