The Green Ember: Ember Falls (Book 3)
The battle for Natalia's freedom rages on as Morbin Blackhawk and his ruthless wolves tighten their grip on rabbitkind, rounding up those who dare to stand against them.
Though separated by circumstance, Heather and Picket remain united by a common goal: to defeat Morbin and restore peace to their family, friends, and homeland. Heather finds herself deep behind enemy lines in an oppressed community where fear runs rampant and a secret group of rabbits is quietly building a resistance. Meanwhile, Picket continues his training under the legendary Helmer as the two wrestle with their next move in the fight for freedom.
As the resistance grows and the battle against overwhelming odds intensifies, loyalties are tested, unexpected allies emerge, and the true cost of freedom becomes painfully clear. With darkness closing in from every direction, will courage, sacrifice, and a flicker of hope be enough to ignite the flames of freedom?
Reading Audience:
I would say anyone who loves a good story can enjoy this. Reading-wise, probably ages seven or eight and up.
Stuff to be aware of:
Alcohol/Drugs - One line in the book reads, “sour taste of their brew,” while characters drink from mugs.
Gore/Violence - Most of the violence and gore you will find in the third book in the series is very similar to the first two books. Here are a few things to note.
A female rabbit is slapped by a male rabbit so hard she falls off a wall she is standing on.
Rabbits are “fattened up” to be eaten by wolves.
Children are lined up to be punished for something that adults have done, but the story doesn’t make clear what the punishment will be, nor does it describe it.
A hot iron is pressed on a character’s arm, but it is not described in depth, leaving it up to the reader’s imagination.
A pile of rabbit skulls is mentioned and described.
Language - A few times, the author tells us that a character “cursed,” but no curse words are ever written out in the story.
LGBTQ - None
Sexual - None
Other - A character is described as feeling “dead.”
Overall
As I said about the first book, “This series is a great choice for families and readers of all ages. While there is some mild fighting and a few character deaths, nothing is overly graphic. The only potentially intense element may be the wolves, who serve as the story’s primary villains. Throughout the series, biblical values and spiritual themes are thoughtfully woven into the characters and their journey. The writing is simple yet elegant, making it easy for younger readers to follow while still engaging for adults. It’s an excellent story to enjoy together as a family.”
I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the Green Ember series, but this one is the best yet! With each installment, we discover more of the world S. D. Smith has masterfully crafted. The stakes continue to rise, and the characters grow and mature as they face new challenges and navigate the journey into adulthood.
The Green Ember series has quickly become one of my favorite modern fantasy series. It deserves a place on your bookshelf alongside the works of C. S. Lewis and Andrew Peterson. If you're looking for an exciting adventure filled with memorable characters, heartfelt themes, and hope in the face of overwhelming darkness, this series is well worth your time.
If you are planning to read the series, the author suggests this reading order, which is also publication order. The list is below, or you can read more about it on the author’s site, found HERE. I have read several of the other books, and at this point I would say, S.D. Smith is a good clean author you can fill good about your children reading.
